Things A Funeral Home May or May Not Tell You

In the realm of end-of-life services, knowledge is not just power—it’s your right. We at Immortal Urns™, LLC recognized this a long time ago. Fortunately, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) also recognized the need to empower consumers (for the most part) during vulnerable times and instituted the Funeral Rule. This set of regulations ensures that you have essential rights and protections when dealing with funeral homes and cremation providers. In addition to this Funeral Rule, we’ve compiled a revealing list that looks at what funeral homes may not eagerly want to share.

Your Rights Under the Funeral Rule

1. Freedom of Choice

You have the right to buy only what you want. Funeral homes might present packages, but you are not obligated to accept them. Instead, you can choose individual goods and services that align with your preferences and budget.

2. Transparent Pricing

Say goodbye to hidden costs. The Funeral Rule grants you the right to obtain pricing information over the phone. This transparency allows you to make informed decisions without feeling pressured or blindsided by unexpected expenses.

3. General Price List (GPL)

Funeral homes must provide you with a General Price List (GPL), an itemized breakdown of goods and services. This list empowers you to understand the costs associated with various options, giving you the clarity to make choices that suit your needs.

4. Casket Pricing

Before laying eyes on caskets, you have the right to view a written casket price list. This ensures that you are fully aware of the costs associated with different casket options before making a decision.

5. Outer Burial Container Pricing

Similar to caskets, funeral homes must provide a written price list for outer burial containers before you view them. This transparency allows you to make decisions based on both preference and budget.

6. Itemized Statement of Services

Prior to payment, the funeral home must present you with an itemized statement of the selected services, complete with individual prices and a total cost. This empowers you to review and understand the expenses before finalizing arrangements.

7. Explanation of Necessities

The written statement must include an explanation of any required funeral goods or services, ensuring that you are fully informed about the necessity and cost of each element.

8. Cremation Alternatives

If you choose cremation, you have the right to opt for an alternate container, such as wood, cardboard, or minimum container fiberboard, instead of a traditional casket.

9. Providing Your Own Casket or Urn

You can exercise your right to provide your own casket or urn, and funeral homes cannot charge a handling fee for this service.

10. Embalming-Free Arrangements

Embalming is not a mandatory component of funeral arrangements. You have the right to opt-out of embalming without facing pressure or coercion.

11. Scattering Ashes

If you plan on scattering your loved ones ashes, you do not need to buy a scattering urn. Please just use the plastic urn that a good funeral home or cremation service will provide for you.

12. You Do Not Need a Funeral Director

In all states it is legal to have your loved one’s body at home after they die. In Pennsylvania, you may designate a person to be in charge of your interment. You can have a funeral without involving a funeral home or the services of a funeral director in most states.

13. Pre-paying Does Not Always Guarantee Savings

While pre-paying for funeral services may offer peace of mind, it does not always guarantee cost savings. Some funeral homes may provide discounts for individuals who prepay, but we always encourage you to shop around before making any concrete decisions. If you need further guidance, contact us and we can help you navigate. Note: While pre-paying is not always necessary, we ALWAYS encourage pre-planning your funeral. Pre-paying is not pre-planning.

14. Pre-paid Funeral Arrangements ARE Transferable

If you have already pre-paid for your funeral arrangements, and you move, find a better price, etc., you have the liberty to transfer your arrangements between funeral homes, ALWAYS. In fact, you don’t even need a reason. It can just be because you want to.

15. Donating Your Body to Science is the Most Cost Effective Option

Followed by direct cremation.

Empowering Consumers, Ensuring Rights

The Funeral Rule is your shield against unwarranted pressure tactics. By understanding and asserting your rights, you not only make informed decisions but also contribute to a transparent and respectful end-of-life experience. At a time when emotions run deep, knowledge becomes your guiding light, ensuring that your choices align with your values and wishes.
