These words aren’t just a quote by Roger Waters; they’re the opening line of an obituary we penned for a cherished family member. Crafting the blueprint for Immortal Urns™, however, felt akin to composing a final masterpiece, much like Mozart writing his own requiem. Truth be told, it’s always felt this way, given our 11-year immersion in the funeral service industry, especially during our formative years.
From these experiences, Immortal Urns™ took shape like a Phoenix rising from the ashes. Trigger Warning… We never felt comfortable with the “sales” aspect of the funeral business, which, no doubt, is a colossal industry, raking in an astonishing 20 billion dollars annually. Along the way, we encountered statements like, “Don’t go for something cheap; choose something less expensive.” Seriously, what the heck! To be fair to the funeral service profession, not all funeral directors resemble stereotypical used car salespeople. However, the vulnerability and emotional turmoil experienced during grieving can make it easy to be taken advantage of, even by oneself.
Years ago, we left the funeral industry but continued to lend a hand to friends and acquaintances through their difficult times. It brought us immense satisfaction to help guide them, ensuring they weren’t taken advantage of and, most importantly, letting them know they had a steadfast advocate during their darkest hours. As Tony Hsieh once said, “People won’t always remember what you said or did, but they’ll never forget how you made them feel.”
Although it may seem self-centered, the act of making others feel content or at least “okay” before, during, and after their most trying times gives us a profound sense of purpose and enhances our own lives.
